Trailer Talk: ’44-Inch Chest’

— by BEN FOWLER —

My first thought about “44-Inch Chest” is that in today’s “enlightened” society, this seems to be trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Tough guy finds out wife is having an affair, tough guy and his mates kidnap adulterous wife’s lover and kick seven shades of blue out of him. It may be an escapist fantasy, wanting to exact revenge on the guy sleeping with your wife, but is it really entertaining and maybe thought-provoking enough to warrant a trip to your local cinema?

However, if you scratch the surface a little, you will see evidence of why “44-Inch Chest” is possibly more than meets the eye. First, and most obvious, is the great cast the filmmakers have assembled: Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson and Ian McShane. With these guys on board, this surely isn’t the usual cookie-cutter, Danny Dyer-esque gangster/revenge flick. The trailer begins as such, but as it progresses, you see the story evolve and develop its initial theme into something else completely. Acceptance? Reconciliation? Redemption?

The script too seems killer (pun intended), with lines delivered by the veteran thespians with wit and zip and a constant underlying menace. A particular favourite from the trailer is when Colin (Ray Winstone) says to his wife’s lover “I want you dead. I think you owe me that.” Ray Winstone, in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, said that this was the best script he’s ever worked on. High praise or PR-guff? Check out the film when its released to decide for yourself.

“44-Inch Chest” is due for release Jan. 22, 2010.
