Trailer: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

— by ALEXA MILAN —

The first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” may not hit theaters until November, but in the meantime fantasy fans dying to see some more teens going on quests and experiencing misadventures can check out “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

Based on the books by Rick Riordan, the film follows troubled teen Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), whose problems quickly increase from nearly being kicked out of school to discovering the Greek gods actually exist and he is in fact a descendent of Poseidon (Kevin McKidd).

As he adjusts to Greek mythology being his reality, Percy learns Zeus’ (Sean Bean) lightning bolt has been stolen, and he is the suspect. Percy’s mom (Catherine Keener) also disappears, leading Percy and his friends Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) on a quest to save her, catch the real lightning thief and solve a mystery that is even bigger than the gods.

I’ve never read any of the “Percy Jackson” books, but it certainly sounds like an interesting concept. With former “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus at the helm, “Percy Jackson” has the potential to be a fun adventure film. It also has a strong supporting cast in Pierce Brosnan, Rosario Dawson, Uma Thurman, Steve Coogan and Melina Kanakaredes.

“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” opens Feb. 12.

I’m surprised more movies haven’t tried to capture the Harry Potter audience. Maybe this one will.
