Every star’s rise to fame can take different forms and directions. An interesting one is that of Chris Evans. His big break was playing the cocky jock in the spoof “Not Another Teen Movie” and right away audiences connected with his humor and charisma. He then went on to do movies such as “The Perfect Score” and “Cellular,” each of which were decent movies that showcased more range for the actor.
I consider his role as Johnny Storm in “The Fantastic Four” films to be his big break as it truly announced him to Hollywood and his roles, although sometimes too similar early on in his career, have had a tendency to branch out and show us more depth as of late. His latest film, “Captain America: The First Avenger,” was one of this summer’s biggest films and now we have a trailer for his next film, “Puncture.” The film still shows off his charisma and wit, but it looks to be a bit darker and more dramatic than his recent roles.
“Puncture” is based on a true story. In the film, Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) is a young lawyer and a struggling drug addict. Paul Danziger (Mark Kassen), his long-time friend and co-worker, is the straight-laced one and their personal injury law firm is scraping. But things get a bit more interesting when they happen to take a case of a young ER nurse named Vicky (Vinessa Shaw) who contracted a disease when she was stuck by a contaminated needle.
As Weiss and Danziger start to look deeper into the facts of the case, they learn about a bigger picture involving a conspiracy in the healthcare system and a money-hungry company who is keeping a new invention off the market that could save a lot of lives. As the two lawyers try to bring this new “safety syringe” to the surface for some publicity, the heavyweight attorney for the corporation moves in to silence them. With their reputations and law firm on the line, they fight for what they believe is right even though the outcome seems uncertain to bleak.
I must say that I wasn’t sure about the film before seeing the trailer, but I am intrigued now. The biggest draw to me beside the story and the actors is that I love a great film about the little guy overcoming obstacles and rising to become a hero. It’s funny that our “hero” in this film is a drug addict fighting for a product that would help others’ health — that contrast looks like it could really pay off. It’s obvious by Evans’ physique that this was filmed around the time he was prepping for his role as Captain America and the look they gave him with the scruffy beard and all the tattoos just add to the major contrast this film is showcasing in it.
Overall, the film looks interesting and dark; the fact that it is based off of a true story makes me want to see it even more. In addition to the cast I already mentioned, this film also stars: Brett Cullen, Michael Biehn, Kate Burton, Jesse L. Martin, and Tess Parker.
“Puncture” hits theaters in limited release starting Sept. 23.
