Trailer Talk: ‘The Four-Faced Liar’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

Oh, the thrilling game of “Never Have I Ever.” It’s an exciting way to learn fun and dirty facts about your friends and get lots of drinking done at the same time.

Unfortunately, it can also make you feel pretty uncomfortable if you’re the only one of your friends who hasn’t done something. Enter Molly, who says “never have I ever kissed a girl” and all of her friends drink up. Now, I’m hoping that this isn’t the single reason that Molly begins pursuing a relationship with Bridget, because “The Four-Faced Liar” looks like a good film. It would be a shame for any relationship to begin simply because everybody else has already done it.

The trailer below for “The Four-Faced Liar” sets the story up quite nicely. Molly already has a boyfriend, but after a game of “Never Have I Ever,” her curiosity to kiss a girl is piqued. Molly meets Bridget and they soon find themselves attracted to each other. Molly’s boyfriend suspects that something is going on, but he’s only talking to his friend about it and not Molly. Combined with nice indie songs by Bright Eyes and Badley Drawn Boy, the trailer looks like “The Four-Faced Liar” will have a bit everything: drama, humor, tears, and realizations about love and life.

A lot of my minimal reserve for this film comes from my concern whether the relationship between Molly and Bridget will be realistic. Lesbian relationships aren’t portrayed as much on film as gay relationships are (not in American mainstream films anyways). Usually, it’s just two attractive women making out with each other for men’s attention or they are very butch characters (of course gays also have the “fabulous” stereotype to contend with as well). From the looks of it, however, “The Four-Faced Liar” is taking the Willow/Tara route instead of the trashy reality tv route which is good, I just hope it doesn’t exacerbate any stereotypes.

“The Four-Faced Liar” — which will premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival — stars Emily Peck, Marja Lewis Ryan, Todd Kubrak, and Daniel Carlisle.
