Who’s In and Who’s Out of ‘Spider-Man’?

— by ANDY BEHBAKHT —

It was revealed a couple of weeks ago that Emma Stone had been cast as Gwen Stacy and not too long ago we also learned that Rhy Ifans had been cast as the villain. Now, it’s time for some more casting and this time Uncle Ben Parker and Aunt May Parker.

THR reported that Martin Sheen (pictured above) is in the final negotiations for the role as Uncle Ben (who previously was played by Cliff Robertson). Sheen has the look of a caring uncle, which Robertson did very well. I am interested in seeing Sheen take on the role.

Then, there is some news about the casting of Aunt May. According to THR, Sally Field (best known recently for TV’s “Brothers & Sisters”) is in talks for Aunt May (who was played by Rosemary Harris in the previous series). To me, no one can replace Harris’ portrayal of the beloved aunt, but just as I will do with Sheen, I will give Field (pictured below) a fair shot. They might bring something new to the roles.

So it looks like that we might have our Uncle Ben and Aunt May, but there is one more thing that many of us are wondering about: What about Mary Jane? It seems that Mary Jane won’t be in the movie at all, which The Wrap reported. I’m not sure what I think of that idea but it could be interesting to see a love relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in this version, unlike Rami’s version which featured Gwen’s character as a good friend rather than a second love interest.

Maybe M.J. will be brought in a sequel of this reboot, which I hope this time will bring a better romantic triangle between Parker/Stacy/Watson than in “Spider-Man 3.”

So far this is the cast we have:

    Andrew Garfield — Peter Parker/Spider-Man

    Emma Stone — Gwen Stacy

Sally Fields — May Parker [not official yet]

    Martin Sheen – Ben Parker

Rhy Ifans – Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard [likely]

I guess that the only other major character yet to be cast yet is the famous editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, who was previously played J.K. Simmons. It will be hard to find an actor who will be able to replace Simmons in my opinion.

Stay tuned for more news about casting and more concerning the new “Spider-Man” movie, which will start production in December. In the meantime, are you excited about Fields and Sheen playing the aunt and uncle of the web-slinging wall-climber? Are you disappointed M.J. is not going to be part of this story? Discuss and leave your comments.

Although I have been against this reboot from the beginning but I am slowly coming around to accepting it. On that note Sheen and Fields are both great actors and they could really bring a fresh perspective to their characters.

I’m 100 percent in love with Andrew Garfield after “The Social Network” and “Never Let Me Go,” and the rest of the cast is shaping up to be just as awesome. I agree that J.K. Simmons is going to be really difficult to replace though. I wish he’d just reprise the role in the reboot. And I do think it’s a good thing that M.J. isn’t in the first film. It will give it a very different feel.
