There is a strange tone about this trailer, but I don’t know how it could be otherwise.
The plot involves a high-powered attorney duct-taping her adulterous husband to the toilet … right before their home is invaded by burglars.
Mixing a kidnapping with a romantic comedy is the kind of thing that’s hard to pull off and I don’ t think this movie quite gets there, if this trailer is symbolic of the movie.
On the plus side, it was written by the late Adrienne Shelly, who showed a deft touch with “Waitress,” itself a mix of light comedy and drama. And Meg Ryan — who looks somewhat better than she has of late — can be charming in the right role. Additionally, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long are all capable of good work.
So let’s hope for the best in this odd piece (which, interestingly, was directed by “Curb Your Enthusiam” actress Cheryl Hines).
“Serious Moonlight” arrives in theaters Dec. 4.
