‘Lord of the Rings’ Headed to Blu-Ray, But …

— by SEAN GERSKI —

If you have a blu-ray player and a really nice TV, this is something you will definitely want to think about picking up. Of all of the movies available to show off your system, there aren’t too many that can outshine The “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

But … now the bad news.

The movies in the nine-disc set are the theatrical editions. While that isn’t a problem for some, those who want the extended versions are going to have to wait.

My take: This is a case of Warner Home Video trying to take “Rings” fans for a ride. The extended versions are due at a later date, and they are trying to get those who can’t wait to buy this set to get the inferior product now — with expectations that they will also buy the extended versions when they arrive (this is called “double dipping”).

I say don’t buy this version in April when it arrives. I mean, who likes to see the bad guys win?

The set is due on April 6, 2010, with a cover price of $99.99 (but they can be pre-ordered for $69.99 at Amazon).

There are few things that irritate me more than planned double dipping.
