Ten Clips From ‘Planet 51’

— by SEAN GERSKI —

When the Academy Awards nominations are announced on Feb. 2, 2010, there will be great anticipation over which animated movies made the cut for the Animated Feature Film category.

In some years, it is hard to justify even three films receiving nominations. However, this year there are 20 films up for the five spots.

According to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, these are the 20 movies that have been submitted for consideration for the award:

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”
“Astro Boy”
“Battle for Terra”
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
“Coraline”
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol”
“The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”
“Mary and Max”
“The Missing Lynx”
“Monsters vs. Aliens”
“9”
“Planet 51”
“Ponyo”
“The Princess and the Frog”
“The Secret of Kells”
“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”
“A Town Called Panic”
“Up”

While not all of them are winners, clearly some good movies aren’t going to make the cut.

The next movie coming out that has a shot of getting nominated is “Planet 51,” which features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman, Sean William Scott and John Cleese.

“Planet 51” will land in theaters on Nov. 20. In the meantime, here are 10 clips from the movie:

I can’t see this flick having any chance of squeeking into the Best Animated Film Oscar category. Maybe in a weaker year. But with UP, MARY AND MAX, CORALINE, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, PRINCESS AND THE FROG, PONYO and A CHRISTMAS CAROL in contention, it’s a pretty tough year for a middle-of-the-road effort to make the list.

Oh, it has zero shot of making it. But it did make the final 20, so I chose it for the story hook. Nothing is going to beat “Up” in all likelihood, but if something does, I imagine it would be “Coraline” or “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”
